Cajun String Bands: The 1930s: Cajun Breakdown

The opening of southwest Louisiana to outside cultural influences (radio, records, juke boxes, etc.) in the 1930s marked a period of transition in the performance of traditional Cajun music. Replacing the accordion with the violin as the lead instrument, Cajun bands began to play more popular forms of music, particularly hillbilly, country, and western swing. This collection features the music of several Cajun bands from that period including The Merrymakers with J.B. Fuselier and the Hackberry Ramblers with Luderin Darbone.
