New Release in the Tradiciones Series: ¡Soy Salvadoreño!

The rural villages of eastern El Salvador are home to one of the most joyous yet little-known regional musics of Latin America. ¡Soy Salvadoreño! Chanchona Music from Eastern El Salvador by third-generation family group Los Hermanos Lovo is the 32nd release in the Smithsonian Folkways Tradiciones/Traditions Series.

New Release in the Tradiciones Series: Soy Salvadoreno!

When the family group fled El Salvador’s civil war, they brought their music to Washington, D.C., where the lively sounds are as much an invitation to dance as a way of creating cultural solidarity.

Smithsonian Folkways Trivia!

Each month we'll ask a trivia question; email your answer, name, and address with the subject "September Trivia" to SmithsonianFolkways@si.edu by September 30, 2011, and a randomly selected entrant with the correct answer will win a free CD of his or her choice!

September Question: “Chanchona” music from El Salvador translates into English as “big pig.” What instrument is known as the “big pig”?

Congratulations to last month's winner, Joseph from Davis, Ca, who correctly answered “Tabla” to the question: Zakir Hussain, featured on Ustad Mohammad Omar: Virtuoso from Afghanistan and on three albums in The Mickey Hart Collection, plays what Indian percussion instrument featuring two hand drums of different sizes and timbres?
