Dear Subscriber,

When summer arrives in Washington DC, the annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival is right around the corner, and Smithsonian Folkways will be there!

Whether you take the "Are You Smarter Than a Curator?" quiz, purchase the new album by three-time Festival performer Cimarrón, or attend the free Smithsonian Folkways evening concerts, we appreciate your ongoing support.

“Are You Smarter Than a Curator?” “Are You Smarter Than a Curator?”

Smithsonian Folkways director Daniel Sheehy challenges you to the Folklife Edition of the “Are You Smarter Than a Curator?” quiz! This free, five-question quiz will challenge your knowledge of culture and music, and for every question you get right, 10 CENTS will be donated to Smithsonian Folkways.

Plus, U.S. residents will receive a FREE STICKER for taking the quiz.

Smithsonian Folkways Trivia!
Each month we'll ask a trivia question; email your answer, name, and address with the subject "June Trivia" to SmithsonianFolkways@si.edu by July 10, 2011, and a randomly selected entrant with the correct answer will win a free CD of his or her choice!

June Question: What style of music, originally performed on the Caribbean coast of Colombia with an accompanying courtship dance, has become one of the most popular Latin American genres worldwide? (Hint: the traditional variation is performed by Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto.)

Congratulations to last month's winner, Liza from Keene, New Hampshire, who correctly answered “Matewan” to the question: Bluegrass pioneer Hazel Dickens grew up in a mining family in West Virginia and appeared in several films, including a 1987 film about a coal mine workers’ strike. What is the film? Dickens also appeared in the 2000 film Songcatcher.
Smithsonian Folkways is a nonprofit endeavor, and CD and digital download purchases sustain both the mission and the music. Liner notes are available as free downloads. Thank you for your support.
