Fresh Son Jarocho from Son de Madera Smithsonian Folkways has released Son de Mi Tierra, a vibrant new son jarocho album from the forward-looking group Son de Madera from Veracruz, Mexico. Premiere Issue of Folkways Magazine Smithsonian Folkways has launched Folkways Magazine, a quarterly, multi-media online magazine, to highlight the artists and recordings that make Smithsonian Folkways a unique collection of music from around the world. Each issue will feature in-depth feature articles (see this month's features on Pete Seeger and Nati Cano), video performances, field reports from music producers and researchers, rare archival objects, and much more to come. Bernice Johnson Reagon recently received an honorary doctorate of music from Berklee College of Music. We remember Manny Oquendo (1931-2009), leader of the group Conjunto Libre. Oquendo appeared on the 2001 Smithsonian Folkways release New York City: Global Beat of the Boroughs.
