Corridos de la Frontera

The band Los Pingüinos Del Norte (The Penguins of the North) is typical of the thousands of strolling conjuntos found throughout Mexico. Conjuntos perform for tips in cantinas, on the streets, in the plazas, at parties, and wherever there are social gatherings. Many conjuntos perform corridos, or narrative ballads, about oppression, social conditions, and the lives of outlaws. In this recording, Los Pingüinos Del Norte performs mostly older corridos from the first part of the 20th century, which almost without exception tell the real story of events, although from the perspective of the local population. The liner notes provide both Spanish lyrics and English translation.
