Ernest Phipps and his congregation were from a holiness church in Kentucky. An Anglo-American church, the type of holiness denomination they belonged to is unknown. Their first recordings were made on July 21, 1927 in Bristol, Tennessee, shortly before the Carter Family made their famous debut.
