Anthology of American Folk Music Volume 2: Social Music, Track 43
Oh Death Where is Thy Sting Rev. J.M. Gates Recorded New York: September 20, 1926 Rev. J.M. Gates, sermon with his congregation Originally released on Victor 35789B
The recorded sermons of Rev. J.M. Gates (1885-1940s) were among the top selling records to African-American households throughout the country during the early part of the 20th Century. Gates was from Atlanta, where he was the minister of the Calvary Church. His records were so popular that he was able to record throughout the Depression--recording over 200 sides between 1926 and 1940 (Don Kent, notes to Yazoo 2015). In a burst of energy, Gates recorded 70 of them in 1926 alone (Larry Cohn, notes to Columbia 47911). "Must Be Born Again/Oh Death Where is Thy Sting" (see Track 42) were released as shortened excerpts on the Anthology. (The original was released as a rather odd-sized 12" 78rpm with a longer running time than the average 78rpm disc.)
FOR ADDITIONAL RECORDINGS of Gates see the collections: The Gospel Sound (COL 31086a); The Gospel Sound, Vol. 2 (COL 31595a); Roots 'n Blues (COL 47911c); An Introduction to Gospel Song (FW RBF5c); Country Gospel Song (FW RBF19c); Jazz, Vol. 1: The South (FW 2801c); The Black Country Music of Georgia, 1927-1936 (OJL 25a) and Before the Blues, Vol. 1 (YZ 2015c).
