Dance of Tamir Agha

Gevorg Dabaghian, Grigor Takushian, and Kamo Khatchuaturian
Gevorg Dabaghian, a professor of duduk at the Komitas State Conservatory in Yerevan, Armenia, plays the lead duduk on this track. He is accompanied by a second duduk, called dham duduk, which plays a continuous drone, and a drum called a dhol. Dabaghian's ensemble recreates the music of a male-ritual dance done in the Moks area, near Lake Van. This performance comes from a recording of the Shoghaken Ensemble, a group that Dabaghian founded in 1991 to recreate the authentic sound of Armenian folk music. (During, Levin 2001)
