German Favorite Songs

Ernst Wolff (1905–1991), a classically trained singer of opera and German lied (art song), recorded five albums of German songs for Folkways. Accompanying himself on the piano, Wolff performs a variety of folk songs and other favorites, all with straightforward melodic lines. His smooth, sophisticated vocal delivery is reflective of his classical training. The song “Ein Maennlein Steht im Walde” may be heard in the well-known children's opera, Hansel and Gretel, by the German composer Engelbert Humperdinck.
