Meskin II
Uzbeks highly respect the master-disciple relationship. The master, they say, is more important than one's own father. This idea is sometimes reflected in musical forms. In "Meskin II," a variant of a traditional melody from the Ferghana area of Uzbekistan, Abdurahim Hamidov plays the dutar, a two-stringed lute, in perfect unison with the tanbur, a bronze-stringed long-necked lute, played by his close disciple, Shuhrat Razzaqov. Subtle ornaments are mirrored on both instruments¾plucked with a metal plectrum on the tanbur, and strummed on the dutar. (During, Levin 2001)
